「石頭在呼吸 花蓮」這七個字，字面上就是個材料笑話。光復鄉大農大富平地森林園區裡，19座最高達13公尺的巨石錯落在草木之間，看起來該用吊車和卡車才搬得動，實際上是充氣的。花蓮縣文化局的新聞稿把它們稱為充氣巨石，作品英文名《Iwagumi Air Scape》，出自澳洲墨爾本藝術與科技工作室ENESS。

重量是眼睛先騙自己的

石頭的權威來自重。站在一塊岩壁前，膝蓋會先於腦袋承認它不會動。充氣材料把這個預期整個拆掉：表面是軟的，形狀靠空氣撐著，風大一點，輪廓可能有細微的起伏。遠看是岩，走近是一只被吹飽的巨大袋子。

這個反差正是整件作品的鉤子。石雕藝術季辦了這麼多年，慣例是鑿、磨、削，減法的藝術；ENESS交出來的是加法，往裡面灌氣。自由時報的報導說，這是藝術季首度邀請的國際光影團隊。至於ENESS怎麼選材、袋身多厚、內部怎麼供氣照明，公開資料裡沒有創作者的說明，這一塊只能等具名的藝術家自己開口。

森林是另一把尺

作品首站在花蓮市日出大道，展了19天，兩側是街廓與招牌。第二站換到草地與樹林，文化局的說法是，森林提供比城市更開闊的觀看尺度。換成街頭的白話：以前巨石跟大樓比高，現在跟樹比，樹是會長、會搖、會落葉的，巨石反倒顯得像剛從地裡冒出來的東西。

白天，樹影爬過軟的表面，光是從上面篩下來的。到了夜裡，裝置點亮，光從裡面往外透。同一顆石頭，白天被外面的光描繪，晚上自己發光，這是充氣材質才做得到的事：實心的岩石不透光。

現在去，得照這張時間表

原訂10月23日的開幕因薔琵颱風延後，展期調整為10月31日至11月16日，每天上午10時至晚間8時免費入場。11月1日的開幕與音樂會、10月31日至11月1日的原住民特色市集已經結束，今天（11月2日）前往，看到的是裝置本身，沒有節目。官方提供「光復火車站－花蓮觀光糖廠－大農大富平地森林園區」的免費接駁，園區蚊蟲多，長袖長褲包鞋是官方的叮嚀，不是客套。

首站「近9萬人次」是主辦單位公布的數字，口徑是日出大道那19天，不能直接搬來當森林站的成績。同一檔藝術季裡，石雕博物館的《化生》與花蓮美術館的《石的詩意：地底、表層、回聲》是另外兩檔展，展期到2027年1月24日，與這組充氣巨石是不同的展。

展期剩下兩個週末。要看軟的石頭在樹影裡呼吸，還有到11月16日這一段。

Stone Breathing in Hualien: Giant Rocks Made of Air

Search “石頭在呼吸 花蓮” and the joke is in the materials. In the Danong Dafu Plain Forest Park in Guangfu Township, 19 giant rocks, the tallest reaching 13 meters, sit scattered among the trees. They look like something that needs a crane and a convoy of trucks. They are inflatable. The Hualien County Cultural Affairs Bureau’s press release calls them inflatable boulders; the work is titled Iwagumi Air Scape, by the Melbourne art-and-technology studio ENESS.

Weight is a lie the eye tells first

A stone’s authority comes from heaviness. Standing before a rock face, the knees concede before the brain does. Inflatable material dismantles that expectation: the surface is soft, the shape held up by air, and the outline may shift slightly in wind. From far away, rock. Up close, an enormous inflated bag.

That contrast is the hook. The Hualien stone sculpture festival has long meant chiseling, grinding, subtracting. ENESS adds, by filling with air. The Liberty Times reports this is the first international light-and-shadow team the festival has invited. How ENESS chose the material, how thick the skin is, how air and light are fed inside: the public record carries no statement from the creators, and that part has to wait for a named artist to speak.

The forest is a different ruler

The first stop ran 19 days on Sunrise Boulevard in Hualien City, between building blocks and signage. The Cultural Affairs Bureau says the forest offers a wider scale of viewing than the city. In plain terms: the boulders used to compete in height with buildings, and now they stand next to trees, which grow, sway and drop leaves. Next to them, the rocks look freshly pushed up out of the ground.

By day, tree shadows crawl across the soft surface and the light falls from above. At night the installation lights up and the glow pushes outward from inside. Same rock, lit from outside in daytime, lit from within after dark. Solid stone can’t do that; it doesn’t let light through.

Going now, by this timetable

The opening originally planned for October 23 was delayed by Typhoon Chanthu-era weather the bureau names as 薔琵, and the run was adjusted to October 31 through November 16, open daily 10:00 to 20:00, free admission. The November 1 opening and concert, and the indigenous craft market on October 31 and November 1, are over. A visit today, November 2, means the installation itself and no program. A free shuttle runs between Guangfu Railway Station, the Hualien Tourism Sugar Factory and the park. Mosquitoes are heavy; long sleeves, long trousers and closed shoes are the bureau’s own advice, not politeness.

The “nearly 90,000 visits” for the first stop is an organizer’s figure for those 19 days on Sunrise Boulevard. It cannot be carried over as a result for the forest site. And within the same festival, Metamorphosis at the stone sculpture museum and a second show at the Hualien Art Museum are separate exhibitions running to January 24, 2027, not the same show as these boulders.

Two weekends of the run remain. The soft stones breathe among the tree shadows until November 16.
