Taiwan’s Art Scene Has Left the Building
At 7:14 p.m. on September 5, three giant mechanical elephants will leave Shilin and walk down Jihe Road toward the Taipei Performing Arts Center plaza. The hydraulic hiss of their legs, the grind of mechanical joints — all of it mixing with the night market smoke drifting off the sidewalk. No tickets. No seats. Just a commuter road turned into a stage.
This is The Elephant Comes… by French company Compagnie Off, the opening outdoor performance of the 2026 Taipei Arts Festival. The mechanical giant concept has worked on the streets of Nantes for years. But this is the first time Jihe Road has been a runway.
The Airport Too
Around the same time, something else happened in the arrivals hall of Terminal 2 at Taoyuan International Airport. Contemporary dance company “Siao Shi Production” — which represented Taiwan at the Paris Cultural Olympiad — moved their stage inside the terminal. Passengers waiting for luggage suddenly found themselves inside a performance.
Airports are the textbook example of a non-place: transit spaces with no memory, no identity, no one who actually wants to be there. Performing inside one isn’t about “bringing art to the masses.” It’s about planting something in a space that was specifically designed to be forgotten. The terminal now has a moment that can be remembered.
Yilan Is Moving Too
The 2026 Yilan Trend Culture Arts Festival opened its anchor exhibition Street Wave on August 8 at Building 54 of the Zhongxing Cultural and Creative Park, running through August 23. Street culture, contemporary art, and local revitalization operating on three tracks simultaneously — with international street dance and skateboard competitions to follow.
This is harder to pull off than it looks. Commission a public arts festival around street subculture and you risk producing a manicured mood board — something adjacent to a catalog shoot, nowhere near an actual street. The choice of a former industrial site with real warehouse texture at least gets the spatial register right. Whether the content follows through is another question.
The White Cube Isn’t Wrong, Just Insufficient
Taiwan has been building institutional contemporary art infrastructure since the Taipei Fine Arts Museum opened in 1983. The white cube’s training is real — curatorial language, conservation, international dialogue. None of that is going away. The issue is simply that white cubes only reach people who already decided to walk in.
The iron elephants on Jihe Road require no ticket. The dancers at Taoyuan Airport require no advance knowledge. That’s a different transmission logic entirely: art going to find people, rather than waiting.
The C-LAB Clear Sky Season spread 16 large-scale art installations across heritage lawns, a decommissioned petrol station, and outdoor corridors. These choices point toward the same underlying judgment: the boundary of public art is expanding because the city itself started being treated as a medium.
A Shilin road, a Taoyuan arrivals hall, an old Yilan warehouse — all redefined in the same summer. The elephants move at 7:14 p.m., September 5.
