### Order Full Sugar and the Counter Hears Less

##### The Three Seconds at the Counter

At a drink-stand menu board, the eyes of a Japanese traveler tend to stop on the same spot: the row of words after the plum green tea. The kanji are readable, but the sweetness isn’t. Is 少糖 sweeter than 半糖? How “micro” is 微糖?

The cup is already in the clerk’s hand, and the line is growing. Those three seconds are where hand-shaken tea trips up most first-timers.

##### What the Official Page Says

The Japanese-language [plum green tea page](https://www.chingshin.tw/jp/product_detail2.php?Key=1) from Ching Shin Fu Chuan is blunt about it. The “sugar level” column refers to the amount of [fructose](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fructose) added on site during preparation. It is an ordering option. 無糖 means no extra sugar is added at the counter, not that the drink contains no sugar at all. The plum itself is listed among the ingredients.

Then the numbers. A medium cup (420ml) runs 4 kcal at 無糖, 48 at 微糖, 88 at 半糖, 112 at 少糖. A large cup (650ml) goes from 8 kcal to 184. The 全糖 column holds a single slash.

The note explains the slash: the highest sugar setting for this drink is 少糖, and a customer who habitually orders 全糖 is served 少糖. A cup ordered as “full sugar” has been a less-sugar cup all along.

That rule belongs to one item at one chain. Other shops and other drinks may place their top setting elsewhere, so each menu has to be read on its own. The same chain’s [pudding milk tea page](https://www.chingshin.tw/product/pudding-milk-tea) swaps in liquid cane sugar and also caps sweetness at 少糖. Its table lists regular ice with 少糖: 70 grams of total sugar and 613 kcal for a large, 34 grams and 355 kcal for a medium. Pudding plus milk tea is a different weight class from plum green tea.

##### Ice Is the Other Half of the Code

Sweetness is usually followed by an ice question. Both pages mention half-moon ice made by an ice machine. Ice-level wording differs between shops, so the menu posted at the counter is the reference. Reading the wall once beats memorizing any conversion chart.

These drinks are made by hand on the spot, and the official pages say so: actual calories can vary slightly with human error. The sweetness in the cup is a scoop of a person’s hand, not a lab reading.

##### The Second Order

On a first visit, a traveler will often just point at someone else’s cup and say “this one.” The second visit goes differently. After reading that row of words, and knowing that “sugar level” means sugar added on the spot, and that the top rung may not be called full sugar, an order needs only two parts: the drink, and the level.

When sweetness is a worry, go one step down from the top. Plum green tea already brings sour and salty notes, and with less sugar the tea comes through.

One more thing: a customer’s own cup takes 2 yuan off a large (650ml) and 1 yuan off a medium (420ml). The pudding milk tea page lists 5 yuan off. A bag with a cup in it gets one extra question about sweetness, and a slightly smaller bill.
