### A Chinese-Character Puzzle Game Just Closed Out Sakurai’s 17-Year Award

##### The Puzzle Is Made of Characters

There are no monsters in *Word Game*, no health bars. The protagonist is the Chinese character itself — scenery, objects, dialogue, all built from characters that players push, split apart, and erase to solve puzzles. It sounds like a pun. It isn’t. A five-person team, Taiwanese indie studio Team9, took their Traditional Chinese original, adapted it into Japanese, and carried it into the biggest design award in Japan’s game industry.

On September 15, 2026, during Tokyo Game Show, Japan Game Awards handed out its Game Designers Award to *Word Game*. In the same ceremony, *Pokemon Pokopia* took the Grand Prize — a Nintendo-scale release sharing the stage with a puzzle game made by five people.

##### Seventeen Years, No Successor

The weight of this award comes from who ran it. [Masahiro Sakurai](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Masahiro_Sakurai) created and hosted the Game Designers Award starting in 2010, judging purely on originality, never on sales figures. This year, organizer CESA announced the award’s end — no successor could be found to carry it forward. *Word Game* didn’t just win a category. It became the final recipient of an award that no longer exists. Judges picked it by an overwhelming margin, praising the puzzle mechanics themselves.

An award ending isn’t a loss to anyone. It’s a seventeen-year judging framework reaching its limit — and the last thing it recognized before closing was a Taiwanese game built entirely out of Traditional Chinese characters. That sequence matters more than any acceptance speech would.

##### Same Week, Same Show Floor, Another Award

*Word Game* wasn’t the only Taiwanese indie title winning at Tokyo Game Show. During the same event, another title, *YARETA*, took gold in SELECTED INDIE 80 — a category that awarded only one platinum and a handful of golds globally that year. Two different award systems, one for original design, one for global indie evaluation, both landing on Taiwanese-made games at the same show.

Calling this a single-cause “rise of Taiwan’s game industry” oversimplifies it. A market rewarding Taiwanese studios involves the finished quality of the work, the execution of a cross-language adaptation, and years of exhibition and distribution ties between Taiwan and Japan — not one factor, and not some inherent national talent. What’s worth remembering is narrower and more concrete: five people decided to turn Chinese characters into puzzle pieces, and Japanese judges picked it by an overwhelming vote.

##### What’s Left After the Award Ends

There will be no next host for the Game Designers Award. That’s settled. What remains is the record: the last work chosen across seventeen years was built from Chinese characters, made by five people, translated from Traditional Chinese into Japanese before it ever reached the judges. The trophy goes into a display case somewhere. The sequence — a small Taiwanese team built it first, Japanese judges chose it to close it out — stays as written.
